Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral with chemical composition MnCO3. In its (rare) pure form, it is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown. It streaks white, and its Mohs hardness varies between 3.5 and 4. Its specific gravity is between 3.5 and 3.7. It crystallizes in the trigonal system, and cleaves with rhombohedral carbonate cleavage in three directions. Crystal twinning often is present. It is transparent to translucent with refractive indices of =1.814 to 1.816, =1.596 to 1.598. It is often confused with the manganese silicate, rhodonite, but is distinctly softer.

Rhodochrosite forms a complete solid solution series with iron carbonate (siderite). Calcium, (as well as magnesium and zinc, to a limited extent) frequently substitutes for manganese in the structure, leading to lighter shades of red and pink, depending on the degree of substitution. It is for this reason that the most common color encountered is pink.

Rhodochrosite occurs as a hydrothermal vein mineral along with other manganese minerals in low temperature ore deposits as in the silver mines of Romania where it was first found. Banded rhodochrosite is mined in Capillitas, Argentina.

It was first described in 1813 in reference to a sample from Cavnic, Maramure??, present-day Romania. According to Dimitrescu and Radulescu, 1966 and to Papp, 1997, this mineral was described for the first time in Sacaramb, Romania, not in Cavnic, Romania. The name is derived from the Greek word ???οδ??χρως meaning rose-colored

Introduction to Moonstone

Get back into your groove with the Moonstone crystal, the dreamy, ethereal stone that channels the moon, a force that has the power to push and pull the tides of our great oceans and your emotions. Keep Moonstone close by and feel the glow of the moonlight infusing your chakras with its brilliant white light. If you're facing issues of stability, whether it's emotional or otherwise, the Moonstone crystal meaning reminds us of the night sky and its steady and reliable cycle of darkness giving way to light.

Moonstone Meaning

The Moonstone Crystal stone meaning is linked with our ancient fascination with the moon, the glowing Mandala of the sky. Call on the Moonstone crystal meaning to unlock the inner goddess that exists deep within your spirit and channel the brilliant white illumination of moonbeams shining light on your pathway to balance and harmony.

Moonstone helps to open up the heart chakra, which allows us to be more receptive and in touch with our inner feelings. Like waves crashing on the beach in a study push and pull of the tides, get back into your own natural rhythm and discover hidden treasures deep within the self. Moonstone is a creativity charm, and it rocks at bringing out your muse because it reminds you of the miracle of life and our vast universe of infinite possibilities.

Moonstone Healing Properties

The Moonstone crystal meaning is associated with the inner goddess, a symbol of fertility and sensuality. The life-giving feminine figure is an empowering visualization that gives us the gift of increased intuition, the perfect prescription for cleansing the mind of negative emotions holding you back. Fear? Shrug it off. Self-doubt? You got this. With the Moonstone crystal by your side, channel its healing powers with daily meditation, a practice that helps to clear the mind and center the spirit.

For a deep and healing therapeutic session with Moonstone, retreat into a sacred healing space free of clutter and distractions. Meditate on your intention for the new moon and the next monthly phase of goals, aspirations, and dreams you have for your life. Repeat this ritual on a full moon and experience the full potential of your soul under the glow of moonlight.

The Moonstone Crystal reminds us to go with the flow, which doesn't always mesh perfectly with the demands of modern life. Resonating the mysterious and enchanting moonscape, the Moonstone crystal stone is like a painted landscape of moonlight on a clear night sky. Its distinctive sheen reflects a rainbow of pearly hues like blue, yellow, silvery gray, and white, which symbolize the moon and its connection to fluctuating moods and the ever-flowing cycles of life.

The moonstone crystal properties are deeply rooted in ancient philosophies, especially its effects on opening the heart chakra. In fact, the Hindu tradition associates this stone with the divine feminine principle and considers it a symbol of love. Thanks to its simple, elegant shades of white and subtle shimmer, Moonstone was a favorite setting in gold and silver jewelry among the ancients from India and the Celtic tribes of Europe. This dreamy gemstone is a type of feldspar that forms parallel structures within the crystal matrix, which balances light back-and-forth in a natural phenomenon called labradorescence, the miracle of light also found in Labradorite and Blue Moonstone.

Because of its connection to the moon, this stone rocks at soothing emotions during that time of the month. The Moonstone crystal healing properties are the best stones for balancing hormones and providing support during periods of hormonal change such as puberty or menopause.

Fossil Coral HistoryFossil coral is a natural gemstone that is created when prehistoric coral is gradually replaced with agate. Corals are marine animals and it is their skeletons that are fossilized and preserved. The fossil coral forms through hardened deposits left by silica-rich waters. The entire process can take over 20 million years.

The proper name for fossil coral is "agatized coral" or "agatized fossil coral." Agate, with its silicon dioxide composition (SiO2), is a variety of naturally occurring chalcedony--or microcrystalline quartz--rather than a type of coral. For this reason, fossil coral should not be mistaken for endangered or protected reef coral or precious coral. Fossil coral is also much harder than precious coral. Most agatized fossil coral exhibits a dull to waxy luster and interesting skeletal-like ancient coral patterns, most often appearing in flower shapes.

Fossil coral deposits are often used for the making of health and drug supplements because of their high calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium content. Because fossil coral can remove chemical impurities such as chlorine and formaldehyde it is used in industrial fertilizers and water purification filters.

Fossil Coral Metaphysical PropertiesAccording to metaphysical beliefs, fossil coral is a grounding stone good for bringing about change. Agate is thought to be able to help heal pancreatic disorders and improve blood and air circulation. Fossil coral is used for healing eye, skin and stomach illnesses. It is even believed to enhance longevity.

Although coral is not a traditional birthstone for any month, it is a non-traditional zodiac stone for Taurus. Fossil Coral Geological PropertiesFossil coral is created through the process of calcium carbonate (coral) being replaced by silica. The silica ranges from light amorphous opaline to dense forms of chalcedony. Depending on the exact mineral concentration, fossil coral specimens can have slightly varying densities. Although the pattern and body color of fossil coral is quite distinct, it can be mistaken for other types of agate such as moss or dendritic agate.

Most fossil coral is found in Indonesia and the USA (in Florida and Georgia). Fossil coral from Indonesia is thought to be the most unique and desirable. The Florida state legislature designated agatized fossil coral as its state stone in 1979.

Mineral Information (microcrystalline quartz)
Chemical Composition SiO2, silicon dioxide
Hardness 6-1/2 to 7 (Mohs)
Specific Gravity 2.60 (+0.10, -0.05)
Refractive Index 1.53 to 1.54
Proper Care of Fossil CoralBecause fossil coral is a form of quartz (agate), it is quite durable compared to most other gemstones. Clean fossil coral using warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, then rinse well to remove any soapy residue. Despite its hardness and durability, fossil quartz can still be easily scratched by other materials. Avoid wearing, mixing or storing fossil quartz with other gems, whether softer or harder, to prevent scratches and fractures.

Always remove gems and jewelry before exercising or any vigorous activity. Like most gemstones, avoid the use of any harsh household chemicals (bleach, sulfuric acid and suchlike) when caring for or cleaning your fossil coral. Most forms of agate are quite porous, allowing them to be easily stained, meaning that they can absorb other chemicals and colors quite easily. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, as heat can permanently alter the color of your gemstone. When storing fossil coral, wrap it using a soft cloth and place it inside a fabric-lined box for added protection.

Eudialyte is a rare cyclosilicate mineral which was discovered in 1819 in the Julianehaab district of Greenland. It is a popular mineral in collections however due to its attractive and distinctive colors. Eudialyte's colors are quite pleasant and give the collector an all-together attractive and rare mineral. It can show distinctive colors of a red-violetmagenta, red, pink, blue, yellow and an attractive brown. Much of the eudialyte on the market today comes from the Kola Peninsula, Russia and one would be fortunate to add to one's collection of fine minerals from this wonderful site.

Why Buy Loose Gemstones Instead of Pre-Set Jewelry?

There are many reasons, but basically it boils down to value and choice.

When buying your Fluorite gemstone loose instead of a pre-set stone, you can be sure you are getting the best value for your money.  Loose gemstones are less expensive, a better value, and you can really see what you are paying for.  The most important part of getting the right price and finding the best value is to first see what you're getting. A jewelry setting will hide the inclusions inside a gem, and can deepen or brighten its color. With a loose stone you can much more easily inspect the gem and see it for what it really is.  In this way you can get a better idea of its true worth and be sure you are paying a fair price.

The second advantage of buying a loose gemstone is choice.  You are free to pick the exact color, cut, shape and variety of the stone for the setting of your dreams, be it yellow gold, white gold, platinum or silver; prong set or bezel set with diamond accents.  You can experience the joy of creating your very own, one-of-a-kind jewelry design. Choose from a variety of jewelry settings and styles to create a completely original presentation that will perfectly suit your individual gemstone and will be as unique as you are!

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral with a chemical composition of MgCO3. It is named after the presence of magnesium in its composition. Magnesite usually forms during the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks or carbonate rocks by metamorphism or chemical weathering.

Magnesite is used to produce magnesium oxide (MgO), which serves as a refractory material for the steel industry and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Small amounts of magnesite are also used as a gem and lapidary material.

Magnesite can form by several processes. Some of the more common are described below.

  • The carbonation of magnesium-rich rocks such as peridotite or serpentinite during regional, contact, or hydrothermal metamorphism. Magnesite formed this way is sometimes cryptocrystalline, with a significant chert content.
  • The alteration of limestone, marble, or other carbonate-rich rocks by magnesium-rich solutions during regional, contact, or hydrothermal metamorphism. High-purity magnesite can be formed by this process.
  • Formation in the regolith above weathering ultramafic rocks and other rocks with a high magnesium content. This formation is facilitated by carbonic acid in subsurface waters and often produces nodular magnesite.
  • Precipitation as a secondary mineral in veins and fractures that cut across carbonate and ultramafic rocks.

Tiger iron Gemstone (or tigereye matrix) is a quartz-lignite aggregate gemstone containing layers of vibrant golden tigereye, metallic grey hematite and rich, red jasper.

Tiger iron is also sometimes called mugglestone, to the surprise and delight of Harry Potter fans everywhere! (This unusual term probably comes from "mucklestone," found in a place named "Moclestone" in what is now Great Britain.) This version of tiger iron has little, or low contrast, tigereye bands--which can take some of the (dare we say it?) ... magic ... out of the stone. Some versions of mugglestone are also low on red jasper, making it a highly included, banded form of natural hematite.

Tiger Iron Metaphysical Properties

In Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement, balance comes from the combination of yellow (earth colors) and black/dark brown (water colors). Because yellow is also associated with communication and dark colors with independence--as well as strong self-discipline--tiger iron gives a strong, clear message when worn. That's a big part of tiger iron's spiritual power.

Tiger iron is said to contain the metaphysical properties of its component stones--the grounding power and circulatory affinity of hematite; the healing power and blood-cleansing abilities of red jasper; the energizing power and clarity inducing strength of tigereye--as well as being considered powerful in its own right. Tiger iron is believed to be a rare and potent three-fold stone; it grounds energies, protects the spirit and manifests the will. As such, practitioners are wary when pairing it with other stones, lest it supercharge them.

Tiger iron is affiliated with the root, sacral and solar plexus chakras. It is assigned to the western signs of Scorpio and Leo, and is popular among "earth" signs such as Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. It can be found among those born in the Year of the Metal Tiger in Chinese astrology (1950 and 2010).

Tiger Iron Geological Properties

There is still scientific uncertainty as to the formation process of tiger iron. Some geologists think this stone is a stromatolite, which includes banded layers of laminated algae fossils from sedimentary deposits. An alternate theory is that tiger iron is a banded iron formation (BIF), formed when the earth was far more oxygen-rich than it is now. Both schools of thought agree, however, that tiger iron is formed in sedimentary deposits.

Deposits of tiger iron are found in Australia, Brazil, Mexico, in the Lake Superior area of the United states and, of course, in the Moclestone area of England.

Proper Care of Tiger Iron

While tiger iron is a strong stone, it's layered structure means there are weakness built into it. Avoid using ultrasonic or steam cleaners with it. The mix of other gemstone materials means different parts of the stone can have different sensitivities to household cleaners. Use warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth to wipe down tiger iron, and remove any traces of body oils or perspiration.

Septarian History

Septarian specimens are believed to have formed during the Cretaceous period when sea levels were much higher. Volcanic eruptions and other occurrences resulted in the death of small sealife that then sank to into the seabed. As the specimens decomposed, sediments would accumulate and create a nodule or mud ball. When the oceans eventually receded, these mud balls were left exposed to the air and dried out, causing shrinking and cracking. The beautiful patterns you see inside septarian nodules are the result of this cracking.

Septarian Metaphysical Properties

These ancient stones have a plethora of metaphysical abilities. Many people believe septarian to be a healing stone as well as a protective stone. Septarian nurtures and grounds the wearer, bringing about feelings of happiness and understanding. This versatile stone is also a speaking stone that is said to improve communication skills of the holder. Septarian is associated with the lower chakras: root, sacral and solar plexus.

Septarian Geological Properties

Septarian specimens are geodes that are a combination of yellow calcite, brown aragonite, grey limestone and white or clear barite. The word septarian comes from the Latin word "septum," meaning "partition." Septarian nodules contain angular cavities as a result of cracking, which are called septaria and create divisions throughout the stone. These unique septaria can be any length and each septarian can have many different cracks. Calcite leeches into the cracks of septarian to form calcite crystals on a layer of aragonite, which is on bentonite clay. Eventually, bentonite is replaced with limestone, resulting in the nodule turning to stone.

Septarian stones are found along the Gulf of Mexico, all the way inland to Southern Utah. Other specimens have been discovered along Madagascar where water levels similarly receded.

Color

Grey with white or yellow middle and brown lines

Hardness

3 to 4 (Mohs)

Proper Care of Septarian

Gently rinse septarian with warm water to clean the specimen. Jewelry with septarian should be thoroughly dried before wear or storing. It is not recommended to use any harsh chemicals, ultrasonic devices or steam cleaners with this geode. Septarian specimens have a low Mohs hardness of 3-1/2 to 4, meaning this stone is vulnerable to scratches, divots and other surface marring as well as cracking. When storing septarian, keep the geode away from harder materials, preferably in a soft pouch or separate bead tray.

Designing with Septarian

Each septarian specimen is unique with an ancient quality that makes these stones a joy to design jewelry with. Septarian usually does not have a stringing hole, which means these specimens are most commonly used in jewelry thanks to seed bead bezels, wire wrapping or macramé nets and other braiding. Using seed beads, wire or cording that coordinates with the inclusion colors of septarian helps to highlight the pattern and draw attention to the piece. Earthy tones are a favorite to incorporate with septarian, especially in the dark green, brown and taupe color ranges
